EAT: En Couleur Vives

Our Story

Eat: En Couleur Vives is a vibrant stage play that intertwines the worlds of culinary arts, family, and ballroom culture, exploring themes of grief, loyalty, and resilience. Leo, a gifted chef from the House of Rosé, grapples with the recent loss of his mother while navigating tensions with his current roommate and best friend, Charlie, a master’s student now aligned with the rival House of Crème de le Crème. Structured across three acts and twelve scenes, the narrative oscillates between intimate home spaces such as a common area (kitchen & living room), a dining room, and their basement. The play also includes sets of each of the ballroom house’s rehearsal spaces—and the electrifying ballroom event, En Couleur Vives, where houses compete in categories like runway, face, and vogue.

This stage play delves into the complexities of chosen family dynamics, all while grief simmers beneath Leo’s culinary creations and Charlie’s academic ambitions. The climactic ballroom showdown, infused with themes inspired by the comedic series, In Living Color, becomes a cathartic spectacle. Subtitled En Couleur Vives (French for “In Living Color”), this play’s house names and vibrant aesthetics underscore its celebration of queer creativity. As the final scene closes on the eve of Leo’s mother’s funeral, the trio of pillars—Food • Family • Ballroom—merge into a meditation on legacy, healing, and the nourishment of community. With its rich emotional layers and kinetic energy, this piece serves as a testament to the transformative power of art, kinship, and the spaces where love and loss collide.
